great telly & sketchup

so many things happened today, J came round and painted the living room ceiling, i finished one round of marking and dropped it off, dinah finished her last bit of coursework and dropped it off, i dropped off my bike at the menders, to be picked up tomorrow,

i bumped into N & his lovely daughter C, popped over to his to see john, (the only name in this place), toyed with the idea of doing this week's improvisation with him but decided against it later, a little too soon since the last one...

walked back to here and got distracted on the old railway line, the one that is a school, many estates, allotments... found a path i'd seen on google earth, leading to a green space just the other side of the bridge from that school by downhills park...

kind of strange and not as far away from the world as it could be but nice enough...

then home and i watched the last 2 episodes of the wire series 1 which was genius...

chilled a tiny bit with J then me & dinah hung out, eventually watching fargo, then the last episode of madmen series 1 both of which were also genius...

and finally sketchup which i've had for a little while but never really looked at, i caught sight of a sketchup file somewhere and opened it up... some nonsense i'd very roughly done the 1st time i used it...

so i've been using it, the 2nd time now, and it's great... i'm building something, like a house, quite burroughsesque... a building in his city of the dead is probably what it is... that place he describes in my education - a book of dreams...

ubuntu working

so finally, i think i've cracked it, thanks to this piece of advice, i'm currently in the new computer (still XP) which is getting internet from the old computer running ubuntu...

windows is a little stupid sometimes, after i had made it work, but before i'd rebooted my new computer (which is what makes it work here) my googlemail notifier in my new computer worked... but firefox didn't...

anyway it all works now, just have to sort out the soundcard in ubuntu, then once i can capture video like i can in vegas (which is one of the more important functions of the old computer - apart from networking)... maybe i'll kiss XP goodbye on that computer...

but how sad that sounds... it will make me much happier to say... i'm kissing goodbye to XP altogether... but for now cubase & vegas in XP rule my life...

in other news a lovely ex-student of mine had a look at the 100th and was surprised to see john sinclair there, the same weekend that he met john, (being today)... i'm not sure what the connection is but these people in my past life who turn up in strange places in my current life... it's great...

the wire continues to be great, i've got 5 series to get through in all and i just hope they're all as good as this 1st one...

reading in bed

waking up slowly, being brought tea by one's lover, reaching for the book that you've almost finished, lying in bed in that languor finishing that book...

one of life's pleasures...

i dropped off cities of the red night to john who is in the bunker and now i'm home preparing to meet the boys (M&O) for some song writing x

PS - writing this from ubuntu - although no solution just yet

the wire

it's all about american tv sometimes...

there's an actor in the 1st series of the wire who i think is the same actor who played a poetic sniper on a roof in the 1st series of kill point that i watched recently...

the wire is the better of the two programs... both of which were given to me by virgin media, although they only gave me the 1st episode of the wire, i'm watching the rest through other means...

it's really good... HBO know what they're up to...

i'm also nearing the end of cities of the red night that i'm reading before lending to john sinclair... i was hoping to finish it on the train home from work tonight but it's not quite all done yet... great writing...

oh and ubuntu, last night in amongst many attempts i got the system to work, internet sharing on our little network...

this morning it didn't work... have to work out what it was that i did right... once it's working i can spend a bit more time in ubuntu, for now, every minute i'm on it dinah can't have the internet and that's no good, but once that side works i can be in it all i like...

the improvisations

so, on the occasion of the 100th weekly improvisation i guess i want to say what it does for me...

and also what it doesn't do for me, for now, and that is make me any money, you never know, one day i may make a little something from it, D, who is currently managing john sinclair in england asked if i had a donations button on my website, "what if someone wanted to give you £1000? you should make it easy for them to do so"...

also i've been meaning for a year or so now to setup the buying(/selling) of mp3's of the improvisations on longcat.net, not that i know anyone would buy any but i think it's worth making it available, that cd is still for sale, (probably always will be) and i've sold exactly zero of them... partly through not promoting it enough and partly because the beauty of the improvisations... one of the beauty's... is that it's free...

just me doing what i do offering it to the world, take it or leave it...

so let's just talk a little about what it does...

every week i improvise... for my creativity this is great, even if what i do is often in a certain mode/mood and i don't always stretch myself, just playing, creating that space around me to play each week, this is beautiful...

every week i'm on camera... in terms of a future playing music for money it can't be bad to get more familiar and relaxed being in front of a camera...

every week i record and produce the music... my production skills have improved no end through this experience and will no doubt improve in fits and starts as long as i carry on... i'm no recording genius but i'm slowly learning how to get the sound i want...

every week i film and edit video... very similar point to the sound production, my editing has improved and will continue to improve... routinely doing something each week is a great discipline...

and following on from both those points the improvisation has encouraged me to invest in better stuff, my soundcard being the best example, camera's i'm still using the original camera i bought for myself back in april '05, along with the camera i got for christmas from dad and floopy's camera on loan on occasion, so no investment there yet but it could happen...

the improvisation encourages experimentation with instruments... kind of similar to the stuff point... but the space i give myself to fail, that i post whatever falls within the improvisation each week, not all of which is absolutely gold... in a way this means i can be more relaxed about delivering a perfect performance and take the odd risk in instrumentation as well as in harmony... not that i do this often but it's in there...

i seek out musicians to play with, this improvisation with john was the 16th collaborative from the 48 i've done in the 2nd year - so 1 in 3 since i decided to play with others... i'm playing soon (i hope) with a guitarist i met through a room booking dispute (well, no dispute really, it was his room i was just using it)...

i find it hard to quantify what it means for anyone else, i get comments over on deoxy every now and again and sometimes on my myspace blog where some people find the improvisations, also the odd individual in my life will mention it to me, mostly complimentary, not always...

i can see how many people have viewed each video and this is something, even if it's just a furtive obsession with numbers, as of now this improvisation (week 5, all that time ago) has been watched the most on googlevideo with 1749 views, a modest amount given almost 2 years of availability... i'm still amazed though that this improvisation, just a week later but on the more volatile youtube has so far been watched 13,599 times... that strange popularity the reason i got that cd out there for sale... sadly those youtubers don't like to spend money...

a growing body of work can't be argued with either... 100 weeks and i don't know how many hours... all still available to watch... 32 of them were watched yesterday...

the improvisation blanket and the random improvisation pages on my website i religiously update every week and they get very few hits... i'm fond of both of them, the random because it does what it says on the tin, and the blanket because it's just lovely seeing them all laid out like that... i'm aware though that it's a bit mad going to that page on my computer and we've got pretty good broadband in this house, it must be painfully slow on some computers..

ok, so it's not an exhaustive list of what's good for me about the improvisations but it's enough for now...

"congratulations on hundreds more to come" as john graciously put it... i'm digging the hundredthness of it x

john sinclair

me & dinah met him on tuesday night round N's...

D was there and we got into a great talk about books, burroughs, joyce, i said i'd lend john "cities of the red night" by burroughs and the next day i found it and started reading it... also that night we arranged to record the 100th improvisation before he left the country again...

so today (saturday) i cycled over to N's, picked up john (left the bike there), walked back here...

floopy brought his camera over and hit it off with john, dinah & floopy hung out later while me & john improvised... T came round just before john left and they started talking about 1968, hornsey art college, allen ginsberg & the queen of may...

i walked john back to N's, picked up my bike and returned...

the improvisation is a corker... uploading now... that man's laugh...

he's gone back to amsterdam now but he's back on friday and i'm going to finish "cities of the red night" and drop it @ N's before then...

happy days

wroking & notwroking

my one day of paid work this week today, i was pretty stupid, ignoring (or rather just not seeing) all manner of written instructions:

eg - exact change only

lovely to see the HWLC folk, DS & GM in particular, they of obscure 2ndlife work habits...

and i came home to my sweeet boobelah and this thorny ubuntu internet sharing issue...

which i'm close to solving - or at least that's what i'm telling myself...

definitely a step or two forwards...

the mists clearing somewhat...

but still a few more steps to go and the mist still there, just thinner x

dual boot

ok so she's in... quite a bit of configuring before it's all marvellous and it might just be a little too much for me but i'm splitting it into manageable tasks, like "how to configure my sound card to get sound", "how to configure the DHCPD"...

yes indeed ubuntu is what i'm talking about and although i'll still be hanging onto microsoft's coattails for a little while yet, (until ubuntu convince me they've got opensource versions as good as cubase or vegas - sound and video)... this whole experiment has something of the future about it...

my computing has been a few years behind the times for many years now... it wasn't until 3 years ago that i abandoned windows98... that's 7 years behind... XP had been around for a long time before i started wearing it... both my computers are several years old... the one now sporting a dualboot ubuntu/XP being the older, maybe 5-10 years old?

but this ubuntu 8.04 is the most up-to-date fella out there... and while with windows you wouldn't want to touch the most recent releases (vista? i don't think so) with opensource it all seems that much safer...

anyway, going to cycle over to the dawn project with J in a little while & i want to have a crack at the DHCPD...

ubuntu (geek alert)

imagine if you will...

you have a system set up around microsoft that is irritating, far from perfect, but it works, and it was quite easy to set up...

the internet arrives in an XP machine, which acts as an internet gateway, allowing the other computers (an XP machine & a mac) access to the internet...

they are also all networked together in a way that mostly works but is a bit patchy...

the XP machine at the centre of it all is getting sluggish and you're tempted to try installing linux on it... you find a version of linux called ubuntu...

linux (ubuntu) is not as straight forward as XP, although without a doubt better... particularly at networking so they say...

but you don't know how to configure ubuntu so that it all works, and to try it you have to stop the internet from the other 2 machines until you've got it going...

so it's forums for me i'm afraid... and i'm sorry about the geekiness of it i just wanted to get it clear in my head what i'm trying to do...

my frequency of blog posts being most erratic these days, as little as 2 a week and then 3 in 1 day...

x

back in

less than 24 hours this time, and i learnt that the cd drive on my new computer is a sack of sh*t...

i'd suspected this for awhile but there's nothing like really needing a piece of hardware to do something quite basic for you & finding out there & then that it can't do it...

wonderful.. so i got to go over to floopy's and he burnt me the necessary bootable cd's... i was also the victim of a scam... before i knew my cd drive was below par i tried a solution i found on the internet... it didn't work (because of the cd drive)... then found another solution that cost me £4.05 and my phone number (i know, i probably could have avoided that) and not only did i almost immediately get a porn website texting me... but when i finally tried it as a solution it was exactly the same as the solution i'd tried earlier... they took the solution this nice man was giving away free and charged me £4.05 for it...

scum x

anyway i'm in and my brain has expanded that tiny amount needed to accommodate the information that i shouldn't just delete everything on a drive, certain things are necessary...

ok... now for ubuntu...

techy doom

uh oh... i'm in trouble... something's come along and it's burst my bubble...

i'm in the process of trying out linux (in particular ubuntu) on my old computer and so far... i failed to do the ubuntu thing properly... and i messed up xp so i can't get back in...

this has happened before (probably documented in this here blog) and lo & behold it was the move from windows 98 to xp that brought it on that time...

so being as i have 2 computers these days surely it should be a whole lot easier...?

change & refuge

started writing a new tune today, it came from my noisy neighbours and my desire to not hear them... so i started playing a cycle of 5ths on the rhodes, half of the 12 5th's...

and it's definitely a refuge of some kind for me, not just from their noise but also from what it is in me that responds to that noise in a negative way...

and firefox... firefox that i have loved... open source wonderment that it is... has got some kind of bug in the last version that sends me back a page when i scroll up with the mousewheel...

and it means i'm considering moving over to internet explorer which i really don't want to do...

also my old computer is behaving a bit strangely and i'm tempted to just move the whole thing... all 80 gigs of it, over to my new hard drive and just start again, maybe install linux... but will vegas run on linux?

and lastly "kill point" which virgin have given to me, or at least the 1st 9 eppisodes of the 1st series, so i need to find out if the 1st series has only 9 episodes or not... it's a way for virgin to get me to try there "on demand" system which costs something over and above what i pay now... like i need more tv in my life...

oh and singing in unison with a drone... i've started rereading the 1st few chapters of harmonic experience... the book i bought all those years ago and stopped reading because i wasn't doing the practise, well with the harmonium that N has lent to me i can begin the practise and i hope to build up the genuine experience of singing the original intervals that relate to the harmonic series so that i can move forward in the book...

i could probably move forward anyway without the practise but i'd love to do it properly, i so love this writer and his ideas... i believe in him and this way... and i think it's about time i did it...

so that's pretty much all my personal on my own style stuff... of course there are other people in my world... my beautiful dinah has gone off to the liberal synagogue for a ceremony to do with 60 years since israel was created...being the liberal synagogue there'll be some awareness of the problems over there and israel's part in it... i guess...

and last night felinity turned 28, oh sister mine, we drank in a pub that is on my route into town... her G, also E & K who used to live with her and a whole bunch of LJers... very nice it was too... balmy night... i had my 1st bulmers cider.. great company...

rise

@ around 9 pm mars saw fit to leave cancer...

look at me, i'm paying attention to astrology...

it was a couple of months ago that mars came into cancer and i can't promise that i felt it... but i sure have felt something warish in the last week...

yesterday (thursday) or wednesday the moon entered cancer and by now it's jsut about to leave, taking mars with it...

so i'm a bit drunk...

and M came round today and we wrote the song that is at the top of this post...

i also improvised... currently rendering...

and israel turned 60...

and my little sister... the marvellous felinity turns 28 in about 5 minutes...

just before dawn

joni mitchell wrote that song about clouds, but wasn't she living in california by then?

you don't know about clouds until you've missed a number of celestial events because you live in england...

me & dinah had this notion that we were going to cycle off with a tent and be lying out under the stars right now gazing at the meteor shower...

a pinch of salt should be taken with this notion i must admit but had the weather been with us it could have happened...

but no, not even just cycling about the deserted streets gazing at the sky in the east...

or on a high point in the city, like that high bit in hampstead heath.. (although that's probably quite gay at night...)

not to be...

clouds got in my way...

notable deaths workers day polling

a new blog (to me) that i'm liking, colourful, photos, arty, lives in paris but pops to london...

and although they both happened a little while back (days, weeks?) i want to bid a fond farewell to humphrey littleton and to albert hoffman, the former for his love of music and the latter for his mind expanding drugs...

go well gentlemen... go well...

so i cycled to near where we used to live on the off chance i'm still registered to vote there, and i am... although they moved the polling station which foxed me for a little while...

i leftlisted all the way with a 2nd vote for ken in the mayoral.. then i rang up spski and popped in for a cuppa, encouraged him to vote (doing my bit to keep out the BNP) as he hadn't seen his voting slip for the same reason i hadn't seen mine - the moving out and the not being on speaking terms with the old household... i assured him he didn't need it and in fact neither of us had our identification looked at in the polling station...

he showed me some pictures he'd taken (this is his, can you see the lady in the light that i can see?) and i made sure my video's worked on his machine, he's gazing at the dawn project for me with a view to a narrative emerging... although his ideas at the moment are all about where and how to show it...

he also showed me this video which has a couple of seconds of him (@ 1:10) in the bear film we made back in february...

i told him about my plan for phase 2 of the filming which i'm now thinking i might have to wait for the autumn equinox for... what with the length of the days now... i want a camera pointing at the green man's face as the sun 1st hits him, then maybe 5 seconds of video every 10 minutes until the sun leaves him...

right now i think the sun 1st says hello to him around 5am and i've no idea when it leaves him but the day closes around 7ish... not that i'm ready with the camera yet, i suspect i'm going to have to source another one, unless i can find a way of remotely operating floopy's one that i used for the main dawn shoot...

anyway... i floated back here a little while ago but dinah's still out drinking after her opening night of henry the leper... i have a day off tomorrow which will be the improvisation and maybe an esoteric thought or two...
