Yr3wk22 rhodes, NORD synth & electric upright bass

recorded on saturday with JR on electric upright bass, the last we'll see of this particular NORD rack 1 synth,

but fear not the moog is here, i got it this afternoon, wearing my moog T-shirt, carrying the Can record that was part of the deal...

i popped in to marylebone station to see M (sister in law) who was in town, for the 1st time i heard her answer the phone as MK, that was kooky... she's looking very well...

i might do this weeks improvisation tonight, with the moog, floopy's camera is probably going to norway with floopy later this week so it'd be good to take advantage of it being here...

strange that i've been home for an hour or so and i still haven't played it...

inspiration

i didn't notice back in february but teo died,

he of in a silent way, bitches brew fame...

only fairly recently did i discover that both these wonderful miles davis albums had been made by Teo Macero stitching together 50 minutes / 100 minutes from all kinds of hours of miles davis taping everything...

i've been listening to some herbie hancock 70's albums after talking about them in last week's spanner jazz punks rehearsal, also a couple of talk talk albums that yimkin put me onto, their last 2,

then i was reading about in a silent way and i found out teo was gone so i find a teo interview... he raves about all these crazy audio machines he had the technicians @ columbia make for him, this being the 50's and 60's and they didn't have what we have now...

he describes putting "he loved him madly" (a miles tune on get up with it for duke ellington, who died in 1974 when the album was made) through one such machine and suddenly it sounded like it was duke ellington's band, and teo mixed duke ellington so he should know...

in the meantime i've got hold of chillout by the KLF, probably because bill drumond came to a bookshop in woodgreen last week, although i couldn't go because of said SJP rehearsal...

this 1991 album strangely intertwined in my head with the talk talk stuff, different worlds, but overlapping none-the-less...

then in another moment i read that spirit of eden (the 1st of the last 2 talk talk albums - 1988) is partly inspired by the miles tune - he loved him madly...

linking in these worlds as well...

i don't have he loved him madly in digital form, but i've got it on vinyl and i listened to it this afternoon with a crafty smoke, and it is heaven on a stick...

listening to it made me want to plug the NORD (which is leaving me sometime soon, back to it's original owner, lack of funds) into the effect loop of the rhodes to take advantage of the vibrato...

so i did and i've been making some great music with it x

synthesis

on thursday i played D's moog again and it's so, so sexy...

yesterday i picked up the NORD with a view to getting close to the moog but i got sidetracked into this almost corrosive sound that forms the basis of yesterday's improvisation, year 3 week 1...

i love it... i sometimes wonder why i do the improvisations, but week's like this when at the end of the improvisation i express doubt about it's interest for anyone else, listening (watching) back i really like it...

as if i get lost inside the sound, stop thinking about an audience and just play... i wake up near the end and my audience aware personality wonders whether it's been any good, but my floating non-language personality has been guiding the improvisation in a lovely way and there's nothing to worry about...

of course this is me that's really liking it, it doesn't mean that others will like it... but then i am really doing these improvisations for me... it's uploading now...

i've got D writing a script for me i hope, i can't decide whether or not to start cutting up the clips for the cutup wigglyform or whether to wait until the script is ready... cutting them up is the long way round, but just how long will D take? will he be able to do it?

i've got a number of other things to do, but i find it hard getting on with them while this is not finished, but then, this (cutup wigglyform) will either be days of work, or a couple of hours depending on the scriptableness of it...

2 years of my life...

programmed beats and improvising with people in different countries via the internet... that's what year 3 will be i hope, along with the collaborative improvisations and the solo improvisations that i do already...

and thankyou to ganching & stringbeanjean, a fellow can get kinda lonely every now & again, this isn't the most commented blog in the world but i like it when i get the odd word here & there x

synthtastic

st L came round on saturday to drop off his NORD rack synth which i'm checking out with a view to buying off him...

i was deep in editing the improvisation then and didn't get a chance to check out the sounds until later and when i did i couldn't work out a few things... so it remained beautiful but very much not used properly...

i saw him again yesterday where he is a student of mine... in fact the last time i'll be teaching that whole group which is a little sad, they were great... they include S from lucky elephant, G from Show & Prove, and of course st L himself to name but a few...

as it was the end of my teaching them we went out and drank and in fact i drank more than i've drunk for quite some time, me & st L were counting drinks by intervals, the last time we'd been drinking in the summer we'd reached the perfect 5th... this time we reached past the octave... although i was drinking less of each drink the later it got...

me & alcohol don't really mix well, not in large amounts...

so today i woke earlyish with dinah making me a tea, i didn't feel too bad, it could be still on it's way... and i've relooked at the NORD in light of what st L said to me last night, and also i've found a manual online...

so today i am in synth heaven...

i've got to pop over to W(floopy)shaman's in a bit to get the camera but other than that i think i'm going to be synthing all day... x
